The Plot: Cleo King, a young doctor in Charleston, South Carolina, seems to have everything: a nice home, a successful career, and a handsome lawyer boyfriend who is eager to marry her. But because of some strange, half-forgotten guilt from the past, Cleo has serious commitment issues.
When in California on business, she runs into Max Altman, a man she had lived with for four years during medical school. To Cleo’s dismay, she’s still attracted to Max, in spite of the shabby way he treated her. She’s even more dismayed when he follows her back to Charleston.
Cleo’s friends warn her about renewing her relationship with Max, but he swears he’s changed and asks Cleo to marry him.
